FOUNDATION DEGREE ENGINEERING (MOTORSPORT) FULL TIME Next start date(s) Sep Course Location Thames Gateway College Is this course for me? The Foundation Degree in Motorsport Engineering combines three elements: Motorsport, Engineering and Work Based Learning. The programme aims to develop successful learners into professional engineering roles such as vehicle design, specialist component development, vehicle preparation and race set up. The programme focuses on developing core engineering skills in mathematics, vehicle systems and automotive engineering disciplines while offering opportunities for learners to participate in live motorsport events and race vehicle development projects. A strong emphasis is placed on the practical use of advanced tools for data gathering, analysis and performance improvement using simulation tools. A Foundation Degree is intended for self motivated individuals looking to change career, enhance their promotional prospects or to further their education. What will I study? These are the compulsory subjects: Business Management, Aerodynamic Design, Delopment of Employability Skills, Engineering Maths 1 and 2,Motorsport Materials, Engineering Principles and Techniques, Motorsport Project, Motorsport Vehicle Preparation and Inspection, Motorsport Professional Practice & Logistics, Rules and Regulations, Vehicle Engineering 1 and 2 Vehicle Systems Control and Telemetry What are the entry requirements? An appropriate technical certificate in a Mechanical Engineering or Vehicle Technology subject equivalent to 120 UCAS Tariff Points (AVCE, GNVQ, BTEC National Certificate or Diploma), an A/AS Level profile including Mathematics ? min 120 UCAS points or an Access to Higher Education or Bridging Certificate in Engineering. Students who have an appropriate trade qualification (City & Guilds/EMTA/IMI) at Level 2 or 3 would need to complete a bridging course (see BTEC Advanced Diploma in Engineering Principles). Employer support is essential for practical delivery of this course and students are required to secure a work placement if not currently employed within the sector. International students will be required to show evidence of their English proficiency (minimum IELTS banding of 6.5 or equivalent). All applicants are required to attend an interview prior to enrolment. What can I do next? Whilst a Foundation Degree is becoming a widely recognized HE qualification, it also serves as a natural progression to an Honours Degree Programme. The programme allows direct access to the BEng. in Engineering and TGC plans to offer a specialist B.Eng in Motorsport Engineering starting in 2010. What employment does this relate to? Employers in this sector who need engineers who are able to function in a specialised sport in multidisciplinary roles. How will I be assessed? By coursework, field assignments, practical investigations and projects, phase tests and end of unit examinations.
