Foundation Degree Children's and Young People's Services Overview This foundation degree is aimed at those currently working with 0-19 year olds or those aiming to do so in the future. This is a flexible study programme with routes to achievement that can fit in with your lifestyle and work commitments. Description The increasing demand for highly qualified practitioners to work with children, young adults and their families is rapidly increasing. The need to utilise and develop the skills of current practitioners is vital to the growth and improvement of this rewarding and demanding sector. The Foundation Degree in Children's and Young People's Services has two pathways: Early Years or Teaching Assistant. You will study modules that relate to both areas alongside modules that are specific to your specialisation. We can help full-time students find a placement if you are not currently working in a role related to the course. This programme is validated by the University of Derby. How long is the course? This programme lasts for two years full-time or up to three years part-time. How will I be assessed? Assessment methods are varied and may include written reports, presentations, case studies, individualgroup projects and reflective statements. Where modules are work-related, assessment will relate to your own organisation andor vocational setting. What will I study? Modules Include: Core Modules: Starting to Study Work-based Reflective Practice 1 & 2 Integrated Services Equality and Diversity Research Methods and Practice Children's, Young People's and Family Rights Understanding Behaviour Pathway Core Modules: Early Years Provision and Practice The Role of the Teaching Assistant in the Classroom Researching Services Other Modules: Children Playing Children Investigating and Solving Problems Children's Health & Wellbeing Children Communicating Children's Media & Popular Culture National Frameworks for Learning The Foundation Subjects The Vocational Curriculum Inclusive Education Managing and Leading Services Working with Parents and Carers Bringing Men into Children's and Young People's Services Extending Services What does the course lead to? This course will provide you with the knowledge, understanding and professional skills to take into your career or current role. You can expect to move on in your vocational field into senior level roles upon completion. What can I go on to study? You have the opportunity to progress onto the third year of an honours degree either in Early Childhood Studies or Education Studies at the University of Derby. You can also continue onto a teacher training course if you intend to work within education or progress to Early Years Professional Status. How much does it cost? Course fees are payable for each year of all university level courses. Entry Requirements All applicants will be invited to an interview to discuss qualifications, experience and any other related issues. To study this course, you will be expected to have at least one of the following: o Full A Level and three GCSEs at grade C o NVQ Level 3 in a related subject o BTEC National CertificateDiploma in a related subject o Other relevant Level 3 qualification If you have relevant work experience rather than qualifications, we will take this into consideration at the interview. However, literacy at Level 2 is an essential requirement and numeracy at Level 2 is desirable.
