Course Description

Foundation Award in Caring for Children The course provides an introduction to working with young children. It helps develop basic skills in childcare, education and play-work and enables you to experience working in an early years setting. You will learn about the care of children, play and practical activities, growth and development, food and nutrition and health and safety. You will also be able to improve your literacy, numeracy, and IT skills. A supervised work placement is introduced in the final term. The Foundation Award prepares you for further study. Entry Requirements: 12 points at GCSE Level ( English and preferably Maths, Science + one other subject). An interest in working with children. An interview is required. Attendance: Full Time One year full time. Minimum 80% attendance is required. Course Content: Areas studied include: Care of children, Play and Practical Activities, Human Growth and Development, Food and Nutrition, and Health and Safety Practices in Home and Group Settings. 15 days practical work is undertaken in a child care setting during the third term. Assessment: Assessment is through assignment work. Outcomes: Successful achievement of the Foundation Award with Merit or Distinction can lead to further study on the Level 2 Diploma in Child Care and Education (2009).
