First Diploma Health and Social Care course code: 0701001-1 start dates: September 2010 course length: 1 Year location: WCT - All Saints Building, Deansway first year fee: ?TBC additional costs: Plus a Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) Police Check: ?36 course content This is a one year full-time course for those who are interested in a career in health and social care. The BTEC First Diploma is equivalent to four GCSEs grades A-C. You will study six units across the whole year. You will also attend work placements one day a week, starting in October and continuing throughout the course. You will also have two separate one week block work placements. Core units - Communication and Individual Rights within the health and Social Care Sector: In this unit you will learn how to communicate effectively and barriers to communication. You will also learn how to value each person as an individual. - Individual Needs within the Health and Social Care Sectors: In this unit you will develop an understanding of the every day needs of individuals in society and factors that can influence the health and needs of individuals. You will also learn the principles of health and safety legislation and guidelines for health and social care environments. Specialist Units - Vocational Experience in a Health or Social Care Setting: You will attend work placement one day a week from October throughout the year. You will also attend placement for two separate 'block' weeks. You will get the opportunity to experience two different care settings from the following nursery, pre-school, primary school, day centre for older people, day centre for people with additional needs, residential home for older people and nursing home. - Cultural Diversity in Health and Social Care: This unit investigates the wide range of people and their different backgrounds that you will learn to work with and care for. - Anatomy and Physiology in Health and Social Care: In this unit you will develop the knowledge and understanding of the way the body works, the systems within the body and the processes that are necessary to keep us alive. - Human Lifespan Development: In this unit you will study the development and changes that occur in the body from conception to old age. Other course activities Tutorial guidance: you will also have individual profiling with your course tutor on a regular basis. Students will also be given the opportunity to retake GCSE English or Maths, if they have achieved a D grade. You will usually have two or three assignments for each unit which you will be expected to complete in your own time. career opportunities Day Care Assistant Health Care Assistant Residential Care Assistant within areas of provision for young children, people with additional needs and older people progression Further GCSEs Other BTEC National qualifications e.g. Children's Care & Development, Health and Social Care NVQ in Health and Social Care NVQ in Children's Care, Learning and Development Requirement A minimum of 4 GCSEs grades D-G, including at least two from English, Science or Maths. A reasonable standard of literacy and numeracy with an accompanying level of general education, plus an interest in Health and Social Care is needed, together with the motivation to succeed. Applicants will require a satisfactory outcome from the Police (CRB) check this is a Disclosure of Criminal Background of those with Access to Children and Vulnerable Adults and is needed to enable students to participate in work experience. A satisfactory reference is also required
