The course will appeal to those who prefer a more 'hands on' practical experience with enhanced teacher support and who are mindful of future employability.
Design theory and skills are imparted through active learning experiences such as practical workshops, group seminars, inspirational visits, group discussions and group crits. This course contains more workshops and 1-2-1 sessions with tutors than a standard University course, providing students with a supportive, creative and motivational atmosphere, intended to help you transform into accomplished and confident designers upon graduation.

Reflective Report 1 - Building Research Report
Design Project 1 - Small Residential Design (understanding space)
The Foundation Degree starts at the very beginning of interior design training, with students exploring how they research design, channel creativity from their surroundings and record these ideas within a sketchbook. Students will investigate how people use spaces and explore living rituals to understand spatial planning for interior design. Core skills are introduced such as technical drawing, colour rendering, one and two point perspective drawing and freehand sketching. Sample boards, model-making and mixed media workshops are also included, with digital collage and digital furniture boards leading in to the teaching of SketchUp. Weekly inspiration days take students out of the classroom and into London, with visits to design showrooms, city architecture, the V&A and the Tate Modern.

Design Project 2 - Medium Residential Design understanding kitchens and bathrooms
Practical knowledge will continue to develop as students are introduced to principles behind kitchen and bathroom design, as well as colour and lighting all of which will be applied within a residential project. Students get an introduction to Professional Practice and the key abilities they will need to develop as interior designers. Visits for this term include ones which illustrate the evolution of design, from the fabulous Art Deco style Freemasons Hall to the elaborate Middle Eastern inspired Leighton House. The term ends with the teaching of Photoshop.

Design Project 3 - Residential / Commercial Project
In order to generate slick visuals to communicate their design, students will learn AutoCAD and develop new computer aided design skills alongside SketchUp and Photoshop. They will explore lighting design at a higher level, with inspiration days supporting this advanced learning. Graphics for design are introduced to enhance students’ project presentations, as well as develop budding portfolios. Professional Practice is developed through workshops on budgets and costings, as well as giving insight into building regulations. Inspiration days will also provide students with first-hand knowledge of lighting, graphics, utilising space and form and visiting Clerkenwell Design Week.
Foundation Degree - Year 2, Level 5
Design Project 4 - Exhibition Space
Returning for their second year, students can look forward to focusing on different aspects of commercial design – starting off with exhibition spaces. This term will include teaching on materials and their applications, giving students opportunity to conduct in-depth research on important resources such as stone, wood, metal and textiles and the processes through which they are manipulated to create products. This naturally leads to teaching on building and construction, with reference to sustainability and advanced Professional Practice. Inspiration days will include the ROCA Gallery, Westfield’s shopping centre at Shepherds Bush, and the Royal Institute of British Architects.
Students that are eligible for work experience will be aided in getting placements over the Christmas holidays.
Design Project 5 - Large Commercial Design
Design Project 6 - Large Commercial Design
This term introduces students to large commercial design projects – including shopping centres, bars and restaurants. Inspirational visits will encourage deeper analysis of the way these spaces are formulated and the different considerations required. Students will advance their lighting design skills in relation to commercial design, and also learn two new programs – InDesign and EstiPC, which will benefit their professional portfolio development. Inspiration days tie in with the study of commercial design, visiting a number of premises to study more advanced design principles.

Evolving their skills to tackle more complex spatial solutions, this final term focuses on two large design projects – one is a group project with a social focus, working with the KLC Design Changes Lives Foundation and the second is their final major project which will form the basis of the students’ individual exhibition display. At the end of the Foundation Degree, the KLC Careers Service offers 121 sessions for portfolio and CV advice, internships and interviews. The course then culminates in a final Exhibition and Graduation ceremony, which is attended by designers and professionals from the interiors industry.

The third and final year starts with a refresher on using Creative Suite software such as Photoshop and InDesign, in addition to AutoCAD. These programs are used throughout the course, developing and enhancing students’ drawing and digital renders. These skills will be used in designs relating to the construction module and in the commercial design project. Lectures and workshops on professional practice and the legislative framework, which correlate with design projects, provide insight on working as a designer. The first term also covers topics such as advanced lighting for commercial design, the natural world, sustainability and environmental concerns for the design industry, ethical design issues and colour in the built environment. Lectures and seminars begin to further individual’s ideas for design dissertations, through exploring creative ways of researching by using different symbolic modes of representation, vis-à-vis images, moving-images, movement, etc., to consider practice in a conceptual way and how research is designed.

REVIT is introduced and practised throughout terms eight and nine. Seminars, peer reviews, lectures and workshops on construction, technology, the environment, professional practice and dissertations continue to inform and inspire students’ further commercial design project. A number of industry experts such as site inspectors and quantity surveyors describe their roles and responsibilities and how they work with designers and design teams on and off site. This term’s absorbing and challenging design project will be about social change, visualising how the design of a space can make a genuine difference. Design challenges will increase students’ skills during which design solutions will evolve demonstrating high levels of design literacy and critical thinking. Students will present work at a professional level through sketches, diagrams, visuals, drawings etc. using creative techniques coherent to the design proposal.

Alongside the continuation and completion of their final large commercial project, students receive a CPD lecture series which allows them to gain first-hand insight into professional practice and business administration from working designers, helping them to understand the day-to-day social, legal, economic and ethical issues that inform the design process and design projects in general. Throughout the course, the Careers Service offers 121 sessions for portfolio and CV advice, internships and interviews. The course culminates in a final, celebratory Exhibition and Graduation ceremony, attended by prominent designers and professionals from the interiors industry.

- BTEC: National Diploma: MMM (112-96 points)
- No previous art and design experience is required.
We can also accept applications from mature students who do not hold the above qualifications but have sufficient prior learning experience. In this instance, the School will review any short courses, internships or work experience undertaken.
