Course Description

The Cranfield Executive Doctorate is one of only a small group of elite DBA programmes to be recognised by the UK?s Economic and Social Research Council. In the recent Research Assessment Exercise, HEFCE also referred to the resourcing and quality assurance of the Cranfield DBA as one of the world-leading aspects of Cranfield School of Management. The programme provides a doctoral route for ? experienced practitioners or practitioner academics who already hold an MBA or equivalent Masters Degree ? those with alternative qualifications and extensive managerial experience who wish to acquire the highest level management qualification whilst remaining in business ? those wishing to pursue an academic career by making the transition from practice ? current practitioner academics looking to underpin existing knowledge with theoretical rigour The Executive Doctorate is a research based degree, but unlike the PhD the starting point is a practical business issue or problem with which you and your sponsoring organisation are engaged. The outcome of the research is designed to provide valuable insights and understanding to a critical business issue within the sponsoring organisation, as well as contribute to knowledge of the field of management. Although participants will be highly effective managers already, the Executive Doctorate will provide a new platform for developing thinking and learning abilities beyond those attainable through managerial experience alone. It is an opportunity to stand back from your current situation and reflect - perhaps on the challenge of re-structuring the organisation, or developing a radically different set of organisational capabilities. Specifically the Executive Doctorate will enable individuals to develop five key areas: ? Conceptualising Skills ? Research Method Skills ? The ability to apply concepts to practice ? The ability to reflect and learn from the whole process ? Personal Development Cranfield is an institution that uniquely combines academic rigour with practical emphasis - My involvement with the programme has reinforced this view. The programme is well structured and co-ordinated and I continue to be impressed with the calibre of the lecturers and fellow students. John Pillay - DBA student, Programme Manager, ANZ Bank, Melbourne, Australia Structure The Executive Doctorate is a four-year part-time programme, based on a business issue of relevance to both you and your organisation. The focus of the programme is a series of three thematically linked projects which are designed to explore a management issue of your choice. The first project will normally be a review of literature, followed by two empirical projects and a Linking Document which highlights the contribution of what has been confirmed, what has been developed and what is brand new. Underpinning the whole process is a series of taught courses which aim to: ? assist you in identifying and defining the scope of each project ? provide you with the necessary research skills and techniques to conduct the work successfully ? aid you in understanding the issues involved in managing a major piece of research ? develop your skills in communicating and disseminating research in an academic environment. In addition, throughout the programme, all participants are required to present seminars on their work to their peers and faculty and are encouraged to publish in academic journals. Admission Requirements ? You should have a clear understanding of the basic business principles together with extensive practical experience. The programme is issue-driven requiring you to apply your existing knowledge as you undertake your own research. ? You should therefore hold an MBA or equivalent business-related degree with a minimum of four years managerial experience. This would allow a 4-year registration period. ? If you have alternative qualifications and extensive managerial experience you may also be considered for a 6-year registration period. T
