Course Description

This MSc is a premier environmental science course. It has been designed for recent science and engineering graduates, and for early- and mid-career graduates with working experience, who wish to begin or advance careers in the environmental sector. It has also been designed to enable graduates pursue scientific research leading to the award of a PhD. The aims are: To emphasise practical, scientific and quality aspects of the diagnosis (analysis and assessment) and management (remediation and restoration) of environmental issues concerned with contaminated land, water quality, air pollution and waste. To provide a wide range of practical experience, advanced knowledge and critical understanding to enable graduates to have successful and rewarding careers within environmental consultancies and engineers, local and regulatory authorities, industry, research institutes and academia. The MSc is delivered in first-class teaching and research facilities by a dedicated team of internationally renowned environmental scientists. There is also much invaluable interaction with leading experts from environmental consultants and engineers, industry, local and regulatory authorities, and universities and research institutes, who teach, present seminars, host several study visits, and co-supervise and manage research projects. Autumn Term Communication & Co-operation Skills Practical training in written and verbal communication media, project and team management, careers advice and a mock job interview Environmental Inorganic Analysis Practical introduction to sampling strategies, preparation processes and analytical methods to produce quality assured data for heavy metals, ions and radionuclides in soils, sediments, surface waters, airborne particulates, and vegetation Diagnostic & Management Tools Practical computer-based training in statistical analysis of environmental data, GIS, and environmental impact assessment Environmental Organic Analysis Practical introduction to sampling strategies, preparation processes and analytical methods to produce quality assured data for organic compounds in soils and surface waters Contaminated Land Case Study Practical applications of a health-risk, pollutant linkage process: desk-top study, site investigation and sampling, laboratory analysis, risk assessment, remediation and validation Spring Term Water Quality: Diagnosis & Management Practical introduction to aquatic science, hydrogeology, treatment of wastewater and water, and chemical biological and physical monitoring of water quality South Florida Watershed Case Study Practical field study of water quality, ecological surveys of fauna and flora, and investigation of pollutants linkages overview of federal and state projects to remediate environmental and ecological issues Air Pollution: Monitoring, Impacts & Management Sources and sinks, dispersion and chemical conversion, and monitoring, impacts and management of gaseous and particulate air pollutants RHUL Campus Air Quality Case Study Consultancy-style diagnosis and management of ambient and indoor air quality within the confines of the campus: practical field work, laboratory analysis and desk-top research Waste Management & Utilisation Management and utilisation of municipal, industrial and radioactive waste within constraints of current legislation Summer Term: Independent research project Projects usually involve professional and funded collaboration with environmental consultants and engineers, local and regulatory authorities, industry, research institutes and academia. Projects often involve practical environmental diagnosis and management. However, desk-top studies to analyse and interpret environmental data or processes may also be undertaken. Major highlights are presented at the Research Project Symposium in early September, which serves to showcase the professional standards of achievement that have been attained.
