Course Description

Outcome: A STCW '95 OOW (Officer Of The Watch Certificate Of Competency) and Foundation Degree. Minimum Entry Requirements: 120 UCAS points in unspecified subjects. In addition, all universities and individual companies are likely to impose their own requirements in an effort to ensure selected candidates have sufficient prior knowledge and ability to cope with the technical aspects of the academic study involved. This will often involve a minimum level attainment in Maths and/or physics. Framework: 5 alternating sea and college phases as per the outline below. Sea Service Requirement: 6 months minimum (however, the majority of candidates are likely to complete in the order of at least 12 months before being considered ready for final assessment). Watchkeeping Service: 4 months. College Time: 83 weeks, excluding college holidays and optional elements. Total Time: 3 years to first certificate (based on 9 months sea service). College: Offered by a range of Higher Education Training establishments and Universities. Leave: Included with the sea periods. Start Dates: September, January and April/May each year. Associated Training Record Book: MNTB engineer training record book. Phase 5 At College25 weeksCompletion of N/SVQ performance evidence. Completion of bridge watchkeeping. End Of Training ProgrammeThe following optional elementsprovide guidance on how candidates can qualify for a full B.Sc (Hons) degree after completion of the trainee officer Foundation Degree programme.
