Course Description

Edexcel Nat Dip Health & Social Care This two year course offers a broad introduction to the field of health and social care. It is a practical, work-related course and includes essential work placement. You will learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations and activities. You will learn about lifespan development, care planning, anatomy and physiology, communication and supportive skills and other related topics. The course is equivalent to 3 A Levels and provides the opportunity for progression Higher Education. An interview is required for this course. Entry Requirements: Candidates should have at least four C grade GCSEs (including English, Maths and Science plus 1 other subject) or a Distinction grade First Diploma Health and Social Care or equivalent qualifications. They must also be able to demonstrate at interview that they are suitable for a course in health and social care. An individual and group interview is required. Intial assessment at Level 2 Literacy and Numeracy Laguage assessment at Level 2 (if appropariate) Reference from school or employer Attendance: Full Time The course is a full-time, two year course that includes significant supervised work experience. 88% minimum attendance Course Content: The course consists of 18 units taken across two years. There are 9 core units which cover key topics such as equality, diversity and rights communication and supportive skills research and vocational practice. There are 9 specialist units which cover specific topics (such as lifespan development, anatomy and physiology, care planning) in greater detail. Work placement in a variety of health & care settings is an essential part of the course and provides a valuable link between theory and practice. Also included are short certificated courses, such as First Aid, & Counselling Skills to enhance both professional and personal development. Assessment: All units are individually assessed and graded and an overall grade for the qualification is awarded at the end of the course. Two of the core units are externally assessed by an Integrated Vocational Assignment set by the awarding body (Edexcel) - this assignment will also include elements of other units to assess candidates' ability to apply their learning. All other units are internally assessed on assignment work. Outcomes: At the end of the course successful candidates may decide to go directly into work or may decide to enter higher education. Possible careers include social work, social care work, care management, nursing, midwifery, occupational therapy or other professions allied to medicine. Qualification: Successful candidates will be awarded the BTEC National Diploma in Health & Social Care.
