Course Description

ECO-REFURBISHMENT The vast majority of us will never design and build our own new eco-homes, yet our existing houses can make a massive contribution to our carbon footprint and wider environmental impact. This course covers ecological improvements to existing buildings, including energy efficiency, renewable energy, water re-use and conservation, healthy buildings and hazardous building materials. It includes a number of practical demonstration sessions. COURSE CONTENT Introduction to energy efficiency in buildings. Elemental breakdown of heat-loss, and an introduction to u-values. U-values of common building elements explained and U-value practical exercise. Introduction to thermal bridging, problems and solutions. Air-tightness in refurbishment. Insulation values of common and 'green' materials: practical issues and compromises. Introduction to thermal mass: heavyweight versus lightweight buildings. Solid wall insulation: internal versus external insulation - performance versus aesthetics. Materials choices. Practical session: Spaced stud construction for attic bedrooms, treatment of sloping soffits. External insulation of solid walls - the thermal mass option. Internal insulation of solid walls - the lightweight option. The importance of vapour barriers in refurbishment, and an introduction to embodied energy - comparisons of common building materials. Renewable energy options in refurbishment, including passive solar (re-) design. Tour of CAT renewable energy installations and buildings. Consideration of refurbishment versus new-build. Advantages and disadvantages. Resource guides and materials supplies.
