Course Description

A post-qualification professional doctorate designed to revitalise and nourish fully qualified mid-career therapeutic practitioners. Doctoral candidates design and undertake a research and development project which focuses on a topic of direct relevance to their own professional and/or clinical work, and which makes an innovative contribution to their field.

What is a post-qualification professional doctorate?

Professional doctorates are the most rapidly expanding field of doctoral study nationally and internationally. Entry Requirements

The programme is designed for qualified, experienced psychotherapists, looking for an integrated professional and academic development programme, which grows out of and will apply directly to their practice. The prospective candidates will have already contributed in a major way to the field of psychological therapy through expertise in practice, setting up services and agencies, developing training and educational programmes, providing organisational and health service consultancy, publishing papers, writing books etc.

Entry Requirements

  • Formal training in psychotherapy/counselling/ counselling psychology demonstrated by UKCP membership, BACP accreditation, BPS accreditation. Other related accrediting bodies will be considered on a case by case basis
  • Substantial experience as a practitioner, for example demonstrated by work over a number of years in a relevant context.
  • Ability to demonstrate academic competence, for example relevant degree (e.g. Masters), written work (published or presented to other professionals), research.
