Horticulture Diploma in Work-Based Horticulture (Green Spaces-Cemeteries) Level 2 Myerscough reference: 09A2GSCMYW01P Course Length: Work-based delivery undertaken over a 12 - 18 month period at Learners workplace About the Course The course covers a range of horticultural skills and related practices. The main objective of the course is to ensure the development of practical skills and related background knowledge Fees Learners may be eligible for funding towards the cost of training subject to certain eligibility criteria being met. List of Units The Diploma in Workbased Horticulture (Parks, Gardens & Green Spaces - Cemeteries Pathway) is a competence based qualfication covering a range of units, each unit having a credit value. To achieve the qualification a total of 37 credits are required. There are seven Mandatory Units : (worth 25 credits) ? Monitoring health and safety ? Maintain & develop personal performance ? Establish plants and or seeds and planting ? Identify the health and maintain the condition of general amenity turf ? Prepare and excavate internment plots (dig graves) ? Prepare and assist with burials ? Establish and Maintain effective working relationships with others Optional Units The Learner also selects from a wide range of Optional Units with various credit values, to a value of 12 credits. Example of the Units available from which to choose include: ? Prepare ground for seeding and planting ? Exhume coffins and remains ? Maintain drainage systems ? Remove unwanted plant growth to maintain development Industrial / Work Experience All Learners are required to be in vocation related placement for a minimum of 30 hours per week. Possible Careers / Jobs Assistant gardener/landscaper; grounds maintenance assistant. Progression Students are able to progress to the Level 3 Diploma or the Advanced Apprenticeship Additional Qualifications Learners studying for the Diploma as part of the Apprenticeship Framework also undertake the following: ? Knowledge based element - units of the Diploma in work based horticulture assessed using independent methods (GOLA - Global On-line Assessment) ? Transferable skills - either Key Skills Application of Number level 1; Communication level 1 or Functional Skills Maths level 1; English level 1 ? Additional Employer requirements: Emergency First Aid (one day course approved by HSE)* Plus one other legislative or nationally recognised occupational test appropriate to the pathway chosen (e.g. NPTC Certificate of Competence in the Safe Use of Pesticides) *Where a certificate has an expiry date, it must be current at the time of completion of the Apprenticeship. Special Requirements The suitability of work placement providers for Learners is subject to a health and safety appraisal. This is reviewed regularly by Myerscough college staff.
