Level 3 Diploma in Child Care and Education Social Science & Childcare Board and Syllabus details Board: CACHE - Syllabus: The Level 3 Diploma in Child Care and Education (Replacing DCE) About the subject The Level 3 Diploma in Child Care & Education helps you to train towards a supervisory or team leader role. When you have successfully achieved the full Diploma you will be qualified to be 'in sole charge'. You will learn how to promote the care learning and development of children and young people within the age range 0-16yrs. It will give you a secure foundation of knowledge and practical skills to work with children and young people, their families and other professionals. It involves studying the development, education and care of children aged 0-16yrs. It also introduces assessment techniques, both formal and informal, of children's particular needs. This course has a very practical application and leads you towards licence to practice upon completion, when seeking employment in a variety of settings such as Day Nursery, Pre-school, Private Homes, Schools, After - School and Holiday Play & Activity schemes. It is also a route into Higher Education, being equivalent to 3 A2 courses and up to 360 UCAS points. This is a 2 year course. Learning Styles Two days a week - workplace based practical training, and assessment mostly working with children in the 0-8yr age range. Three days a week - college based - practical workshop lessons, tutor led sessions, small group work, presentations, discussions and individual student research and study. Homework -preparing work to carry out in your work place training setting in addition to theoretical assignment research and coursework. Subject combinations and progression The Level 3 - Diploma in Child Care is a four course choice. Students will continue to develop their Key Skills as appropriate. Basic Food Hygiene Certificate and Paediatric First Aid Certificate courses are also offered to students taking this award. Subject modules and assessment The Diploma in Child Care & Education carries the equivalent academic value to 3 A2 courses. Each stage, Award, Certificate and Diploma will be awarded grades A to E. All students will be registered for the Full Diploma but achievement at Award and Certificate level are essential to continue to the next stage. AWARD Unit 1 - An Introduction to Working with Children. This unit will give you an overview of working in children's services and introduce you to the range of settings that provide care & education for children. You will develop your knowledge of professional practice and the principles and values that underpin working with children including the promotion of their rights. Unit 2 - Development from conception to age 16yrs. You will learn about areas of development from conception to 16yrs. You will consider theories of development and how these can influence practice. You will learn skills in observation and develop your own practice in assessment and planning for children's learning. ASSESSMENT - a written coursework assignment for each unit. CERTIFICATE Unit 3 - Supporting Children. How the practitioner can support children through understanding of relevant legislation and by following policies and procedures that safeguard children. This unit also looks at the causes and effects of discrimination in society. Unit 4 - Keeping Children Safe. At the end of this unit you will have developed your understanding about how to keep children safe. You will know how to provide healthy, safe and secure environments that enable children to experience risk and challenge. It also teaches you about the procedures for dealing with illness and emergencies. Unit 5 - The Principles Underpinning the Role of the Practitioner. During this unit you will develop your knowledge and understanding about the underpinning principles of the role of the practitioner in working with children.
