Course Description

The Professional Doctorate in Clinical Research (DClinRes) is a unique collaboration between the School of Psychology and the Centre for Medical Imaging at the University of Exeter. Established to provide high quality clinical research training for applied healthcare practitioners, the programme is designed for Advanced and Consultant Practitioners (NHS Agenda for Change Band 8a+) from the allied health professions of nursing and midwifery, who are expected to undertake applied clinical research. It also provides valuable training for developing Advanced Practitioners who are ready to move into a higher level role. The degree is studied in two stages and includes doctorate level training in clinical research skills, clinical research leadership and reflective organisational practice. You will also complete a service-related research project linked to your own area of practice, allowing you to support evaluation and development of your local clinical service. The final stage of the programme comprises a major research project of original doctorate level research, again related to your area of practice and aligned with strategic aims within your local service and organisation. The programme is supported by the South West Strategic Health Authority and reflects the strengths of the contributing Schools in applied healthcare research, leadership and organisational psychology. The programme is studied over 42 months via distance learning attendance of fortnightly sessions in Exeter during term time. During these sessions you will receive lectures from leading international authorities on clinical research and leadership, group-based learning sets and individual tutorials. You will also need to secure time within your clinical role for additional self-directed study.
