CRITICAL THINKING AS Level (Year One) Level 3 course One year Progression higher education and employment Exam board OCR 2 periods a week This course is offered within the Arts, Culture & English Division Course outline Unit 1: Introduction to Critical Thinking The language of reasoning, Credibility Unit 2: Assessing and developing argument, Analysis of argument, Evaluating argument Developing ones own reasoned arguments. Credibility of Evidence Module 2: Assessing and Developing Argument Candidates doing this course should learn to: understand and apply the language of reasoning; recognize and evaluate reasoning; judge the credibility of sources; develop and present relevant arguments. Teaching styles You will be taught in a variety of ways, there will be class discussion and debate, you will take part in presentations, we will look at past exam papers and you will have to do some individual research. Assessment There are 2 exams and NO coursework. You will take the exams in June. Unit 1 is worth 50% it is assessed in one 1hr 30minute exam (75 Marks). Unit 2 is worth 50% it is assessed in one 1hr 30minute exam (75 Marks). Subject combinations Critical Thinking will help all of your other courses as it develops your communication, analysis and evaluation skills. It is especially useful for students who wish to progress to the following subjects: Law, Politics, History, Sociology, Philosophy, English and Media. Progression Accepted by ALL universities and valued by them as an indicator of intellectual acumen and the ability to reason clearly. Useful therefore for all courses and careers. Key feature This is an excellent vehicle for students to develop a practical understanding of problems and issues as they arise in numerous contexts. Students will acquire a range of skills which they apply to real-life situations. There will be many opportunities to discuss the controversial and the topical.
