Counselling Qualification : Foundation Degree (FdA) Awarded By Course Code: B940 UCAS Institution Code S43 Length of Course : Two years, full-time Why Study this Course? The FdA and BA (Hons) Counselling offer students a strong theoretical and practical base from which to begin their professional counselling practice, while working towards individual accreditation with the BACP. The theoretical orientation is humanistic, with other approaches such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Transactional Analysis also examined. The FdA will include specific training in working with young people, cross cultural populations and women the BA, in addition, provides training in working with ethnic and sexual minority groups, and in counselling clients with differing needs (e.g. eating distress, sexual minority sexuality, depression addiction etc). Students are encouraged to respect the frame and ethos of their core training approach, but also to develop their own individual style and philosophy of counselling. Why Study Here? Applicants holding the Advanced Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling, or qualified Counsellors seeking further professional development, can APEL directly into year 2 of the programme. Course Content The specific aims of both courses are to offer students a rigorous theoretical and practical training as a baseline for their professional counselling practice. Foundation degree graduates can seek employment directly as counsellors, or choose to progress to a full undergraduate honours degree. Course Structure Full time course, involving 2 full days in college, 100 client sessions placement as a counsellor in year 2 and 30 hours of personal therapy. Work Placement Work placements form an essential part of the Foundation Degree. Students will be expected to undertake 30 hours of personal therapy which will begin during the first year, and, in Year 2, to complete a minimum of 100 hours of counselling practice. Assessment Methods Through a range of assessment techniques which may include essays, presentations, portfolios, examinations and the production of a dissertation of between 8-12,000 words in Year 3. Some assessments will require the evaluation of practice within the setting and feedback from agency and clinical supervisor.
