Coronary Heart Disease: Diploma Level Module CATS Points: 30 Academic Level 2 (Diploma) Notional study time: 300 hours Duration: 6 months Why is Coronary Heart Disease important? Almost 2.6 million people have heart and circulatory disease in the UK CHD is the most common cause of premature death in the UK, causing 105,000 deaths a year Around 230,000 people in the UK suffer a heart attack each year The Government is committed to reducing the death rate from coronary heart disease and stroke and related diseases in people under 75 by at least 40%. What does this module offer? This course is for nurses who look after people with CHD in practice or in the community Studying Education for Health?s Coronary Heart Disease module will enable you to treat, educate and manage patients with coronary heart disease effectively. You will develop a sound knowledge base underpinned by essential practical skills. This module covers the following areas: Epidemiology of coronary heart disease Anatomy and physiology Treatment and management: Pharmacological and non-pharmacological Risk factor assessment and lifestyle management National and local policy guidelines Application of evidence based practice Organisation of care Targeting, prioritising and prevention strategies Supported self care By the end of the module you will be able to: Describe the epidemiology of CHD Discuss the anatomy and physiology of the cardiac system Analyse the assessment, diagnosis and management process of patients with CHD Examine pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches to CHD management Evaluate the benefits of a systematic, multi disciplinary approach to patient centred care within the multidisciplinary team setting Critically examine the key issues for patients and healthcare professionals in facilitating supported self care This course will take 6 months to complete and is delivered through comprehensive study materials, supported by 1 study day and 1 assessment day.
