Construction Diploma Level 1 Painting and Decorating course code: 0201019-1 start dates: September 2010 course length: 1 Year location: WCT - All Saints Building, Deansway first year fee: ?TBC additional costs: There will be a small charge for all students for a workshop uniform comprising of T-shirts and a sweatshirt. course content This course is designed to prepare people to enter the industry in their chosen craft. It is designed for delivery in a training environment using simulated conditions. The course consists of 8 units, all of which have a skill and knowledge element. Units include: Safe working practices Working safely within the construction environment. This unit gives you an understanding on how to find and use relevant safety information. Information, quantities and communication This unit provides you with the knowledge and skill to use basic types of effective communication within the construction industry. Building methods and construction technology This unit provides you with the ability to identify building materials and how they are used in the construction industry. Erecting and dismantling access equipment and working platforms This unit enables you to identify hazards, components of scaffolding and to select the appropriate access equipment. Preparation of surfaces This unit enables you to understand the importance of preparation. You will be able to identify a range of surfaces and their preparation methods. It will also enable you to rectify any defects upon or within that surface. Application of paint systems by brush and roller This unit will enable you to prepare the area and apply water and solvent based coatings by brush and roller. You will work with a varied range of coatings on a varied range of surfaces. Application of foundation and plain papers This unit involves the preparation of surfaces ready for application of wallcoverings. You will work with a range of basic wallcoverings. Produce specialist decorative finishes This unit provides you with the ability to produce quality finish base coats which you will apply decorative finishes upon. assessment At the end of each knowledge unit an online end test is taken. The practical assessments are ongoing throughout the course. This involves being assessed visually and all information is then recorded into your practical work book. At the end of the year you will have a final assessment of your practical skills which involves a 4 part practical assignment. To gain a qualification in the diploma learners must be successful in all 8 units and the practical assignment. career opportunities Painter and decorator painting foreman The qualification is a base towards progression opportunities such as site agent or clerk of works etc. student success Emma Rachel Holden joined the Level 1 Construction Diploma after completing a previous Full-time Plumbing programme at Worcester College of Technology. I spoke to Emma and got her thoughts so far: What were your views and expectations of the course? I really enjoy the course and have developed many new skills. Has the course helped you achieve your goals? I wanted to get into the Painting and Decorating Industry and by taking the Level 1 diploma I have gained many skills to help me become a painter and decorator. I hope to gain more skills by taking the level 2 and 3 diplomas in Painting and Decorating. Were your expectations of the course fulfilled? My expectations have been fulfilled by learning many skills that I wanted to gain and more. What did you enjoy about the course and your time at College? I did a previous course at Worcester College of Technology and really enjoyed it. I am glad that I have done this course because I have met many new friends and gained new skills and qualifications at the same time. Now you have gained your qualification what are your future plans? I would like to take the level 2 Diploma in Painting and Decorating to enable me to get into restoration work.
