If you are looking to build a career in Brickwork then the Level 1 Construction Diploma is the perfect start. The course enables you to learn the basic skills required as a bricklayer, starting with the basic techniques such as rolling and spreading of mortar, buttering and the cutting of basic brick shapes. You will then progress through a practical workbook which allows you to demonstrate your new skills and continually learn new ones, constructing both brickwork and blockwork tasks that simulate realistic jobs. The technology units you will study are as follows: Know how to carry out safe working practices in construction This unit covers all aspects of Health and Safety exploring current legislation such as the Health and Safety at Work Act, Accident reporting and identifying hazards within the workplace. It will give you an awareness of how important Health and Safety is and your roles and responsibilities as an employee. Knowledge of information, quantities and communicating with others This unit shows you how to interpret working drawings. You will be able to identify the varied ways buildings are drawn for example plan views, elevations and sectional drawings. You will be able to explore the different scales used when drawing plans. You will learn how to calculate the quantities of materials used within a particular building. This unit also looks at how we can communicate and share information within the construction industry. Knowledge of building methods and construction technology This unit looks at the ways in which buildings are constructed, looking at the techniques and methods that are used. You will be able to identify specific areas such as various types of foundation, sections of a cavity wall, the range of bonding patterns used in brickwork and individual details which form part of the roof construction. Know how to carry out basic blocklaying skills This unit will inform you of the different types of block available and where and when where they should be used. You will be able to understand and describe the different components that will be required to construct varied block walls. Know how to carry out basic bricklaying skills This unit links in with your skills that you will develop within the workshop. It reinforces your learning of how to set out and construct basic brick structures from straight walls in stretcher bond to one brick walls in varied bonding patterns. It will enable you to identify the different tools necessary to carry out these tasks. Know how to carry out basic cavity walling This unit continues to build on your knowledge that you have learned so far. It explores cavity walling looking at the different materials that can be used. It will inform you of specific building regulations that we have to comply with. It will explore the different joint finishes that we can apply to brickwork and details such as the installation of DPC and wall ties. Know how to contribute to setting out and building basic masonry structures up to damp course level This unit looks at the principles of setting out a building. You will be able to describe terms like the 'building line' and 'datum point'. You will understand how to set out a right angle and also learn about what building profiles are and how they are used in setting out. assessment At the end of the year you will be assessed on your practical skills where you will undertake three practical phase tests enabling you to complete your practical unit.
