Course Description

Is this course for me? If you are already working in or are about to start work in the Construction Industry and aiming for a career in building surveying, quantity surveying, site management or architecture, this is the course for you. On completion of the course, you can go on to a full time degree or a Higher National Certificate in Construction. What will I study? This course covers construction technology, management, design, land surveying, building surveying, science & materials, health & safety, building regulations and mathematics. Subjects: Mathematics Building surveying Building technology Construction and the environment Construction Science & Materials Construction Technology & Design Environmental science Graphical detailing Health, Safety & Welfare Planning, Organisation & Control of Resources Surveying processes Structual mechanics Further mathematics Setting out processes Mechanical and electrical services ICT and CAD Design procedures These are optional subjects: Building Regulations & Control (* Option units - one must be chosen) Property Law (* Option units - one must be chosen) What can I do next? This course can lead to higher education e.g. degree at a university or at Lewisham College studying a Higher National Certificate. Lewisham College has an excellent reputation for students progressing onto degree courses from the National Diploma. It can lead to employment in: Building surveying Quantity surveying Building control Architecture Construction management What are the entry requirements? You will need to attend the College for an interview and may be asked to complete a short test. Please do apply as, depending upon your experience, there is some flexibility over entry requirements. How will I be assessed? Assessment is through assignments, phase tests and practical activities such as use of surveying instruments and drawing work. You will have regular meetings with your personal tutor to discuss your progress and to help plan your studies. Additional support, help and guidance is also available from the guidance team or from our Study Buddies (a network of students offering help to fellow students). What will it cost? If you are under 19 and a home student, in most circumstances, you don't pay any fees. However, you will need to find this out when you apply.
