Course Description

Oxford Brookes University Business School is a leader in the rapidly growing area of coaching and mentoring. Experienced practitioners in this field looking to develop their skills can differentiate their practice with a coaching and mentoring supervision qualification. This course provides the theory and practice, and thoroughly explains the fundamental principles, formal standards and skills necessary to become an effective coaching and mentoring supervisor. It is designed to provide an opportunity for highly experienced coaches to build on their knowledge and to explore, discuss and critically evaluate this field of practice in a group of equally advanced practitioners. This process enables you to become a professional who is capable of contributing to the development of coaching as a practice and a discipline. The course is part-time, delivered in Oxford through seminars and workshops, and uses a variety of teaching and learning methods, including interactive and practical learning techniques. There are also regular online discussions and workshops to support learning at a distance. Course content This part-time course comprises seven modules of study amounting to 180 M-level credits. Its modular structure will allow you to design a programme according to your particular area of interest. PG Certificate stage This first year of study comprises two modules: Psychology for Supervision in Coaching and Mentoring explores a wide range of psychological ideas and approaches that provide theoretical underpinning to the supervision process. The philosophy of the module is that supervision is a multifaceted and multi-focused process, the overarching and long-term purpose of which is the continuing development of coaches and mentors. The module will provide opportunities to discuss the ideas of individual development from the perspectives of the main domains of psychology and adult development. As a result of this process, you will be able to create and defend your own model of supervision. Supervision Practice in Coaching and Mentoring is a double module which provides the developmental support and theoretical underpinning necessary for professional maturity as a supervisor for coaches andor mentors. You will have the opportunity to expand your professional knowledge and understanding of supervision, particularly in the organisational context of coaching. The nature of the module is experiential. It involves active experimentation with new ideas and techniques debates about the models and theories of supervision sharing personal experiences of participating in designed activities and group supervision work. Students successfully completing these two modules may leave the programme with the Postgraduate Certificate in Coaching and Mentoring Supervision (60 credits). PG Diploma and MA stage At the end of the first year you continue your study with an Independent Study module, in which you select and investigate a topic relevant to coaching supervision and your chosen context of practice. In the first part of the second year for the Postgraduate Diploma in Coaching and Mentoring Supervision you will study two additional modules selected from a range of optional and core modules that include, for example, Psychological Perspectives on the Self, Coaching and Mentoring in Organisations, Understanding Coaching Research. It is possible to exit the programme at this stage and to be awarded a Postgraduate Diploma (120 credits). In the next stage of the second year you will conduct a research project in the area of coaching supervision to receive the MA in Coaching and Mentoring Supervision (180 credits). We offer a range of courses to help you meet the academic and English language entry requirements for this course and also familiarise you with university life.
