Course Description

Qualification Name: GCE AS Level Chemistry Course Name: Chemistry - AS Level Course Code: BMBT Centre: Islamic College for Advanced Studies (ICAS) Applies to: School Leavers and International Students Availability: Full Time (Various times - TBA) Who is this course for? In partnership with the College of North West London, these courses are delivered at the Islamic College for Advanced Studies. This course is for you if you are interested in Chemistry or if you wish to pursue a degree course later on. This course is normally studied in addition to other A-Level courses. What are the entry requirements? You will need at least 5 GCSE grades A*-C (including grade B or above in Chemistry). In addition, as part of the interview process, you may be required to sit subject specific, English and maths assessments. After applying you will have an interview to determine which course is suitable for your needs and abilities. Minimum Literacy Level: Level 2 Reading: You can read and summarise information by selecting and using different types of documents to obtain relevant information; skim and scan documents to gain a general idea of content and identify the information you need; recognise the writer's intentions and identify the main points, ideas and lines of reasoning; summarise information to suit your purpose. Writing: You can present relevant information in a format that suits your purpose; structure your writing to help readers follow and understand your main points; spell, punctuate and use grammar accurately; construct complex sentences and make your meaning clear. Minimum Numeracy Level: Level 2 Interpret information: You can read and understand tables, charts, graphs and diagrams; read and understand numbers used in different ways; estimate amounts and proportions; make accurate observations and select appropriate methods to get the results you need. Carry out calculations: You can carry out calculations involving two or more steps, with numbers of any size, with and without a calculator; work with and convert between fractions, decimals and percentages; convert measurements between systems (e.g. pounds to kilograms); work out areas and volumes; work out dimensions from scale drawings; use proportions and calculate ratios where appropriate; compare sets of data of an appropriate size and use range to describe the spread within sets of data. What qualification will I receive? GCE AS Level in Chemistry. Where can it lead? This course can lead to progression in studying Chemistry at A2 Level. It may also count towards your UCAS points. What will I study? You will acquire the knowledge and understanding of the fundamental chemistry concepts in order to explain many different aspects of contemporary chemistry, such as climate change, green chemistry, pharmaceuticals and chemistry research. This will include: Unit 1: The Core Principles of Chemistry a. Formulae, equations and amounts of substance b. Energetics c. Atomic structure and the periodic table d. Bonding e. Introductory organic chemistry Unit 2: Application of Core Principles of Chemistry a. Shapes of molecules and ions b. Intermediate bonding and bond polarity c. Intermolecular forces d. Redox e. The periodic table - groups 2 and 7 f. Kinetics g. Chemical equilibria h. Organic chemistry i. Mechanisms j. Mass spectra and IR k. Green chemistry Unit 3: Chemistry Laboratory Skills This unit contains practical assessments that cover the content of Units 1 and 2. The practical assessments cover the areas of physical, organic and inorganic chemistry. The types of practicals that students must complete are qualitative observations, quantitative measurements and preparations. How will I be taught? You will learn through lectures, classwork, practical work in a laboratory, individual tutorials as well as personal study. How will I be assessed? You will be assessed through practical laboratory work as well as written examinations during the year. What support is available while I am
