Course Description

Qualification Name: GCE A2 Level Chemistry Course Name: Chemistry - A Level Course Code: BMLT Centre: Islamic College for Advanced Studies (ICAS) Applies to: School Leavers and International Students Availability: Full Time (Various times - TBA) Who is this course for? In partnership with the College of North West London, these courses are delivered at the Islamic College for Advanced Studies. This course is for you if you are interested in Chemistry or if you wish to pursue a degree course later on. This course is normally studied in addition to other A-Level courses. What are the entry requirements? You will need at least 5 GCSE grades at A*-C (including grade B or above in Chemistry) and AS Level in Chemistry obtained in 2008/2009. After applying you will have an interview to determine which course is suitable for your needs and abilities. Minimum Literacy Level: Level 2 Reading: You can read and summarise information by selecting and using different types of documents to obtain relevant information; skim and scan documents to gain a general idea of content and identify the information you need; recognise the writer's intentions and identify the main points, ideas and lines of reasoning; summarise information to suit your purpose. Writing: You can present relevant information in a format that suits your purpose; structure your writing to help readers follow and understand your main points; spell, punctuate and use grammar accurately; construct complex sentences and make your meaning clear. Minimum Numeracy Level: Level 2 Interpret information: You can read and understand tables, charts, graphs and diagrams; read and understand numbers used in different ways; estimate amounts and proportions; make accurate observations and select appropriate methods to get the results you need. Carry out calculations: You can carry out calculations involving two or more steps, with numbers of any size, with and without a calculator; work with and convert between fractions, decimals and percentages; convert measurements between systems (e.g. pounds to kilograms); work out areas and volumes; work out dimensions from scale drawings; use proportions and calculate ratios where appropriate; compare sets of data of an appropriate size and use range to describe the spread within sets of data. What qualification will I receive? GCE A Level in Chemistry. Where can it lead? This course can lead to progression in studying Chemistry in Higher Education. It will also count towards your UCAS points. This qualification could also help with career prospects in related fields. What will I study? You will study the subject in two units: Unit 1 - General Principles of Chemistry I - Rates, Equilibria and Further Organic Chemistry a) A quantitative study of chemical kinetics and further study of organic reaction mechanisms. b) Entropy and equilibria to show how chemists are able to predict quantitatively the direction and extent of chemical change. c) Organic chemistry will cover carbonyl compounds, plus carboxylic acids and their derivatives. Unit 2 - General Principles of Chemistry II - Transition Metals and Organic Nitrogen Chemistry a) study of electrode potentials, building on the study of redox (in AS Chemistry Unit 2), including the concept of oxidation number and the use of redox half equations. b). Further chemistry related to redox and transition metals. c). Further organic chemistry focuses on arenes and organic nitrogen compounds such as amines, amides, amino acids and proteins. How will I be taught? You will learn through lectures, classwork, laboratory work, individual tutorials as well as personal study. How will I be assessed? You will be assessed through a series of examinations and practical work. What support is available while I am on the course? You have access to a range of online resources, enrichment facilities including study skills, sports as well as group meetings once a week. What will it cost? Full Time Overseas FeesUp to ?1430* UK Ho
