Course Description

IB Chemistry: Higher and Standard Levels Chemistry is the Central Science. It brings together elements of Physics and Biology as well as being the fundamental Science for further study in Medicine, the Pure Sciences and the environment. Chemical principles underpin the physical environment in which we live and all biological systems. Chemistry is an experimental science and the course combines academic study with the acquisition of practical and investigational skills. At the end, students should have a greater knowledge and understanding of the world around them. You will study: A Subject Specific Core including Quantitative Chemistry, Atomic Structure, Bonding, Periodicity, Energy Changes, Kinetics, Equilibrium, Acids and Bases, Redox and Organic Chemistry. For Higher Level students there is additional material to cover in each of the topics. You will also undertake a Group Project and study two optional topics. Practical work is assessed at intervals throughout the two years of the course. There are three examination papers at each level: Paper 1: Multiple Choice (20%) Paper 2: Several short answer questions plus extended response questions (26%) Paper 3: Several short answer questions from each of the 2 options (30%) Internal Assessment of practical work (24%) About this course Additional Costs: Text book and revision booklets approximately ?35 per year.
