Course Description

BTEC National Diploma in Fish Management (Sport Fisheries) A scientifically-based practical training course for those who wish to work in the technical areas of sport fisheries (including angling), fish farming and related industries. The National Diploma is a two-year, Level 3, College-based course including two periods of work experience placement away from the College working on a range of enterprises in the UK and abroad. These are programmed to enable students to get a vital 'foot in the door' for full-time employment. As well as formal lectures and practical skills training in all aspects of fishery studies (including angling), students are also taught closely related skills such as building, engineering and business management to provide comprehensive training required by the industry. Additional skills and qualifications When your learning agreement is discussed with your tutor early in the first term, you will be advised of extra skills and qualifications which are built into the course programme. These secondary learning goals are selected on the basis of their importance to the industrycareer in which you are interested. They will contribute to your employability and will enhance your CV. Qualification equivalence (Level 3) This course is equivalent in level to an Advanced GNVQ or three A Levels. Employment and career prospects Prospects for employment are reasonable with many past students now established in responsible positions. However, the job market is very competitive and students must show their true worth from the outset of the course. It is also important for students tp be prepared to travel to the work, as many posts are available in remote locations, for example in rural Scotland. Holders of the Diploma have secured a range of jobs in the fish farming industries, as well as commercial sport fisheries and the Environment Agency. Opportunities also exist for more advanced study with an increasing number of students continuing onto Higher Education courses. Preferred entry requirements Some applicants consider pre-College work experience which does stand them in good stead when they start the course. Candidates should possess five GCSEs at A, B or C grades or equivalent qualifications including English, with mathematics and a science being desirable. Students may also apply with an appropriate BTEC First Diploma course qualification. Mature students are considered on an individual basis.
