BTEC First Diploma in Children's Care, Learning and Development Is this the right course for me? Yes .if you want to gain practical experience with children. A BTEC First Diploma is a practical, work-related course. You learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands.It introduces you to the employment area you have chosen and provides a good basis to go on to a more advanced work-related qualification. What do I need to join the course? You will normally need to have at least one of the following: ? A BTEC Foundation Certificate in a related subject ? 4 GCSEs at grades D one of which must be in English or Maths ? Other related level 1 or 2 qualifications What will I be doing? You will spend two days in placement and three days in college. You must complete 300 hours in placement during the year. You will be expected to purchase a t-shirt to wear in placement, the cost of which will be approx. 13.00 You will also be expected to pay 37.00 for your Police Check The course is made up of six units 5 core units and 1 specialist unit. The specialist units enable you to study a particular area in more depth. All students take the 5 core units: ? Childrens Development ? Keeping children safe ? Communication with children and adults ? Preparing and maintaining environments for child care ? Professional development, roles and responsibilities in child care You take 1 specialist unit from this list: ? Supporting childens play and learning ? The development and care of babies and young children under 3 years ? Providing support for children with disabilities or special educational needs Key skills There are opportunities for you to obtain Key skills in the following areas communication, application of number, information technology and working with others. Additional Qualification You could also take GCSE English, Mathematics or Science, Deaf Awareness and Listening skills. How long will the course last? It is a full time one-year course. How will my progress on the course be assessed? All 6 units are assessed internally and all of the units are graded and an overall grade for the qualification is awarded. What will I achieve? A BTEC First Diploma in Childrens Care, Learning and Development, which gives you an Assistant licence to practice. And the future With further training or study, students go into careers such as paediatric nursing, midwifery, nursery and primary teaching, early years provision management and early years quality control and enhancement.
