Course Description

BTEC First Diploma in Animal Care This Level 2 course is designed to enable the participants to acquire the basic practical skills of animal care together with the associated theory. The course is of three terms, or one academic year duration beginning in September and finishing in late June of the following year. Topic areas included in the course programme are: Animal Care Animal Health Introduction to Animal Biology Industry and Organisations Work Experience Care of Exotic Animals Animal Nursing Practical Animal Handling Grooming Practical Land-based Skills Livestock Animal Training and Behaviour The course has a good practical bias and up to half of the available time may be spent on demonstrations and practical work. Additional skills and qualifications When your learning agreement is discussed with your tutor early in the first term, you will be advised of extra skills and qualifications, which are built into the course programme. These secondary learning goals are selected on the basis of their importance to the industrycareer in which you are interested. They will contribute to your employability and will enhance your CV. Employment and career prospects The course is designed to allow students to progress to a further course, e.g. National CertificateNational Diploma in Animal Management, with appropriate grades, or a job within the animal care industry, including kennels and catteries (boarding, breeding, guide dogs, etc). The broad range of skills areas covered will enable students to decide on the type of employment or further education they require on completing the course. Preferred entry requirements Students may be accepted directly after leaving school. Applicants would be expected to have performed at least creditably at GCSE level with four D grades (or equivalent) preferably including English and be recommended by their school andor previous employer.
