Sports, Recreation & Land-based BTEC First Diploma in Animal Care (B1078P) What are the Course Details? This course is aimed at those wanting to enhance their knowledge and experience in the care of domestic animal species. Subject areas are related to the various career pathways available in the small animal care industry and include animal grooming, retail and customer care, the pet shop trade and animal health. Learners will gain both practical experience and a thorough background understanding of the animal care industry. All assessments are by written assignments or practical observations. Learners must also complete a five week work placement. The course is equivalent to 4 GCSEs. Is the Course for Me? As part of the course, candidates are expected to show enthusiasm and a commitment to a career working with animals. You will be expected to do practical sessions as well as theory based work. What are the Entry Requirements? Learners will be expected to have two GCSE passes at Grade D or above. These are preferred to be in the following subjects:- English Maths Science (Enrolment is subject to an informal interview). What will I Learn? Learners will study the following mandatory units: (Candidate must achieve all of these units to achieve the qualification): Industry Experience (work placement) Industry and Organisation Introduction to Animal Biology Practical Animal Handling Retail and Customer Service Breeds and Grooming Learners will also take part in regular practical unit duties in our purpose built Animal Care Centre. How will I Learn? There are theory and practical sessions. You will be expected to carry out personal research in your own time throughout the course. All learners will study the following Functional Skills at Levels 1 and 2: Communication Application of Number Information Technology How will I be Assessed? Progress will be measured throughout the course using a variety of methods, including assignments, laboratory testing, practical assessments and oral presentations. What Enrichments are Available? Dog Grooming will be offered as an enrichment to learners on this course. Learners will also be encouraged to participate in the wide range of activities offered across the College to get the most out of their time here. Are there any Trips or Visits? In previous years learners have had the opportunity to visit Crufts, the Lincolnshire Show and to discover the work done by Yorkshire Police Dogs. Learners will also have the opportunity to visit local kennels, pet shops and veterinary surgeries. Is there any Work Experience? Yes. Work placement is a unit of the course and must be completed, this normally takes place in AprilMay for a 5 week block. The placement is chosen and arranged by the student, along with any travel arrangements and equipment needed. The course tutor will need students work placement details no later than 4 weeks before placement starts. Work placements can take place in any area of the animal care industry providing the employer holds a valid employees liability insurance certificate. What can I Progress to? Learners who achieve a Merit or Distinction profile on the First Diploma will qualify to move up to the 2-year National Diploma course. Completion of this course can also lead to a range of careers such as veterinary assistant, grooming parlour assistant, animal handler, kennel and cattery assistant and pet shop assistant. Please Note: Acceptance onto courses may be subject to a satisfactory interview and references. For some courses learners may also be required to pay for a CRB disclosure.
