Course Description

Our online Blues Guitar Styles 101 will take you from being stuck in a rut to playing in each of the six great blues styles with real confidence. How do we do this? With comprehensive video lessons, backing tracks, detailed notes and notation, supported by personalized feedback from an experienced ICMP blues guitar expert. 
 
The course spends one week, or module, on each subject so you can learn the language, history, technique and rhythms for all six essential blues styles. Each module focuses on two of the key players in each style giving you an in-depth stylistic analysis so you too can unlock the musical DNA of that style.
 
Once you have completed this step-by-step course, you too will know how to master the essential guitar styles including Chicago Blues, Texas Blues, West Coast Blues, Memphis Blues, Late Texas Blues and British Blues, bringing a whole new level of fun to your blues playing. It is a highly practical course and you will be assigned tasks to complete in each module.

Course Content

Module 1: Texas Blues covers such topics as Freddy King licks and rhythms, Lightnin’ Hopkins licks and how to use a looper.   


Module 2: Chicago Blues will develop your understanding of Chicago Blues, covering blues curls and the licks and rhythms of such greats as Hubert Sumlin and Muddy Waters


Module 3: West Coast Blues will provide an introduction into this style, with blues bending techniques and licks and rhythms from T Bone Walker and Johnny Watson


Module 4: Memphis Blues will get you started in this important genre, with more extreme bending and licks and rhythms from BB King and Albert King


Module 5: British Blues provides an introduction into British Blues, with licks and rhythms from British greats Eric Clapton and Peter Green plus Blues Vibrato techniques


Module 6: Late Texas Blues introduces you to this genre, with licks and rhythms from Stevie Ray Vaughan and Johnny Winter Licks plus String Muting techniques

Entry Requirements

To make the most of this course, students should be at least ‘foundation’ to ‘lower intermediate’ level on their instrument. You should be able to perform rhythm guitar parts (both chord and riff based) and be able to play a solo using the fundamental techniques.
