Course Description

This programme offers students a postgraduate education in Biomedical Science. For part-time students who are working in UK National Health Service (NHS) pathology laboratories, the MSc provides a route to promotion at work. For those who are not employed by the NHS, the programme enables students to develop career in a range of related areas, for instance: clinical pathology laboratory work, biomedical research or pharmaceutical research. Throughout the programme, students are provided with up-to-date information on disease processes and their laboratory diagnosis. In addition there are discussions and workshops on current issues in Biomedical Science including acquisition and management of new technology and development of strategies for biomedical research. Many modules are supported by seminars by senior level biomedical scientists, clinical scientists and scientists from the commercial sector. For part-time students who are practicing biomedical scientists, there is a choice of tutorial attendance and coursework topics, which enables students to concentrate on one of the specialist pathology disciplines: histopathology, clinical biochemistry, haematology & transfusion science and medical microbiology these tutorials are designed to guide students through some of the knowledge-based aspects of the IBMS Specialist Diploma. About the School The School is at the forefront of modern research and teaching and emphasises the importance of both in order to deliver a top quality education to all students. The Teaching Quality Assessment claims that ?the close relationship between the students and teaching staff at the School of Biomolecular Sciences provides a very harmonious and effective teaching environment?. Teaching is based on the Byrom Street Campus which has a range of general facilities such as a shop, medical rooms and prayer rooms. Laboratories are large and modern, served with interactive IT facilities. All lecture rooms have modern data projection facilities. Access to the campus computing suite is available to all students. There are modern meeting areas for refreshments and chat or group work, and many places where students can use their own laptops to access the University network. Nearby is a modern Learning Resource Centre, and off campus access to a range of electronic books and journals is appreciated by students.
