Course Description

Taught jointly by the Schools of Engineering and Materials Science and Business and Management, the programme draws on the strengths of each to help you develop both engineering expertise and business acumen. The business modules are designed specifically for this programme, taught alongside other mathematicians, engineers and scientists. 

In the first year you’ll take specialist engineering modules, while learning the fundamentals of finance and business management. In the second and third years you’ll increasingly specialise in biomedical engineering, while expanding your knowledge of business strategy, analytics and entrepreneurship. Third-year option modules cover fluid mechanics of the cardiovascular system, medical robotics and imaging.

In the final year you’ll undertake an individual lab-based project linked to the current internationally recognised research taking place in the School, applying the theory you’ve learnt in the first two years of study.

Course Content

You can complete your Biomedical Engineering with Management degree in three or four years. If you choose to do a year in industry or study abroad, this will take place in Year 3 and Year 3 modules will instead be studied in Year 4.

YEAR 1

You will study a range of core engineering and management  principles including:

  • Economics for Business
  • Engineering Design Methods
  • Engineering Mechanics
  • Fundamentals of Management
  • Mathematics and Computing for Engineers
  • Fluid Mechanics

 

YEAR 2

  • Business Analytics
  • Clinical Problems in Biomedical Engineering and Materials
  • Clinical Solutions in Biomedical Engineering and Materials
  • Design for Manufacture
  • Engineering Instrumentation
  • Entrepreneurship
  • Financial Accounting
  • Project Management

 

YEAR 3

In the third year, students undertake an individual research project alongside six taught modules. This provides an opportunity for students to get involved with the exciting research taking place in the School. 

Optional modules cover topics including:

  • Fluid Mechanics of the Cardiovascular System
  • Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine
  • Nanotechnology and Nanomedicine
  • Strategy
  • Implant Design
  • The Management of Human Resources

Entry Requirements

A-Level :- Grades AAB at A-Level. This must include A-Level Mathematics, and Physics or Chemistry. Excludes General Studies and Critical Thinking.

IB :- International Baccalaureate Diploma with a minimum of 34 points overall, including 6,6,5 from three Higher Level subjects. This must include Mathematics at Higher Level, and either Physics or Chemistry, also at Higher Level.

Access HE :- We consider applications from students with the Access to Higher Education Diploma in a Physics and Mathematics based discipline. Entry will normally be to the BEng or BSc. The minimum academic requirement is to achieve 60 credits overall, with 45 credits at Level 3, of which 33 credits must be at Distinction and 12 credits at Merit or higher. Applications are considered on a case by case basis. Before a decision is made, applicants will be invited to a Maths test at Queen Mary, normally in April. This Maths test will assess whether an applicants ability in Maths is at the required level. Applicants will be contacted shortly after the test with a decision on their application.

GCSE :- Minimum five GCSE passes including English at grade C or 4.
