Course Description

BASIS - Certificate in Aquatic Herbicides Training The BASIS course is usually run as: A one-week course in the Spring, followed by A two-day examination in the Autumn Candidates are expected to build on the training course during the summer and gain experience of a range of aquatic herbicide operations. A course project will be assigned during this period as part of the assessment. Candidates should ideally have some knowledge of aquatic herbicides and aquatic plant identification prior to attending the course. A reading list will be sent to students in good time before the course. Prior to the exams, candidates are required to obtain experience in the following areas: Locate a local Agency BASIS-qualified person and shadow the aquatic herbicide application procedure. Go on actual site visit, and assess area proposed for treatment (including asking is the herbicide treatment really necessary? If the herbicide is to be used, which is the most appropriate?) To have some skills in weed identification. To have been on various site visits to witness aquatic herbicide applications in the following situations: - Treatment of emergent weeds, e.g. with glyphosate. - Treatment of submergent weeds, e.g. granular substance (dichlobenil). Any aquatic herbicide spray application and been involved in assessing turbidity, flow, how to calculate dose, etc. To return to a site that has already been treated and witness the effects of the use of the herbicide. To record their site visits in a training logbook. This will be viewed on the day of the exams. Note: Experience can be gained during any aquatic herbicide application, but it may be easier to shadow local flood defence operations.
