Course Description

Bachelor of Science Honours Degree - Year Zero Is this course right for me? This course enables you to change from a non-science background, improve your current science qualification or build on life experience for progression to Year One of a four year honours degree in science. What will I be learning? You will choose two subjects from biology, chemistry and physics to study throughout the year, alongside a compulsory Maths Skills for Science course. In the first term you will undertake a study in a higher education module to develop your learning, research and revision skills. After Christmas, you will take a statistics module. The maths, statistics and study skills elements are integral to the degree programme, so you will need to be prepared to get to grips with these challenging topics, to successfully pass the year. Biology topics will include: cell biology, animal and plant transport, respiration, photosynthesis and ecology. Chemistry topics include: atomic structure, chemical compounds, energy, chemical reactions, the Periodic Table and aromatic compounds, as well as atomic structure, chemical bonding and properties, energy changes in reactions, periodic trends and organic compounds. Physics topics include: nuclear physics and radioactivity; waves, light and sound; work, power and force; optical instruments; classical mechanics; quantum theory; electricity; magnetism and electromagnetism. How will I learn? Teaching is by lectures, workshops, tutorials and practicals, with assessments through practical projects, coursework assignments and exams. Some assessments are online and reflect the extensive use of computer based resources throughout the course - through Moodle, our virtual learning environment. What else might I want to know? You will be a student of both South Devon College and the University of Plymouth and therefore be able to use the facilities and support services of both campuses. You will need to purchase a laboratory coat and a scientific calculator for this course. Purchase of books is not compulsory, but as a rough guide, you may wish to spend up to ??150 on recommended texts. What can I do afterwards? Successful completion of the course guarantees you entry to a fantastic number of BSc (Hons) degree courses at the University of Plymouth including:animal science; biological sciences; environmental biology; human biology with psychology; human biosciences; wildlife conservation; marine biology and coastal ecology or oceanography; environmental science (marine conservation) or analytical chemistry; geology/applied geology, geography, ocean science; geology with computing; applied marine sports science; surf science and technology;marine studies;ocean exploration/science.
