Course Description

Do you dream of becoming a fashion buyer? This contemporary course in fashion management and buying will prepare you for an exciting future in a fast-paced industry as a confident, globally-aware professional.

You will develop an entrepreneurial edge by exploring commercial opportunities for fashion start-ups. In addition, work placement and collaborative assignments will help you to apply your new skills and build your own network.

By the time you graduate, you will have a full understanding of how companies build a competitive marketing edge, and a strong grasp of the commercial needs of fashion brands, both high-end and high-street.

The foundation year course is designed to equip you with the skills and knowledge you need to continue onto your Honours degree. You will study a range of subjects that will underpin your future study and also gain valuable experience of university life, with full access to campus facilities. Successful completion of the year allows you to progress straight onto Level 4 of this course.

Course Content

This course will help you develop the academic, practical and commercial skills you need to pursue a career in the fashion industry. You will get to know the broader context in which fashion functions, while also learning about the fundamentals of fashion design. 

With the course structured around the core themes of sustainable fashion, contemporary fashion culture and future-focused entrepreneurial opportunities, you will look at topics including:

  • the fashion consumer
  • trends and design
  • supply chain
  • buying trends
  • management of fashion markets

 Over the course of your studies you will: 

  • have regular access to professional facilities, including photography and printmaking studios
  • receive one-to-one tuition from staff with active experience in the fashion business
  • work on practical briefs that help you to understand digital fashion and how technology and fashion interact
  • visit a fashion and textiles trade show at Premier Vision or Pret-a-Porter
  • benefit from the expertise of guest speakers drawn from every corner of the industry

During your second year you will have the opportunity to apply your new skills and knowledge, either on a work placement or through a freelance enterprise of your own.

You will also collaborate with students in Film and Media, Photography, and Advertising and Public Relations. This will help you to develop fashion styling, blogging and advertising images, and understand how digital campaigns work through branded content, social and mobile media.

By the time you complete this course, you should have the knowledge and practical skills you need to work in your chosen career. 

Foundation year

There are many reasons for joining a foundation year course; you may not have the exact subjects or grades at A level to meet the entry requirements, you may have been living abroad or want to change direction with your career. Whatever your starting point, the foundation year offers a firm grounding in the skills and knowledge that you will need to get the most from your studies and thrive at University. Successful completion of the foundation year allows you to progress straight onto Level 4 of this course.

Entry Requirements

72UCAS points requiredfrom level 3 qualifications

These can include:

  • A Levels at grades B and C (if you have two A levels) or grades D, D and D (if you have three), or above
  • BTEC Extended Diploma with Merit, Merit, Pass
  • Access to HE Diploma

You also need GCSE English and Maths (grade 9 – 4 / A* - C) or Level 2 equivalents.

Mature applicants (aged 21+): If you do not hold the qualifications listed but have relevant work experience, you are welcome to apply. Your application will be considered on an individual basis.
