Use of Mathematics (AS Level only) USE OF MATHS AS Level (AQA) Campus: Cheadle and Marple (29.07.09) Course overview Use of Maths is about applying mathematical techniques to solve problems. The first unit concentrates on the applications of algebraic and graphical methods. The second unit is based on statistical techniques and their applications. The third unit builds on the methods covered in the first unit as well as looking at mathematical models involving simulations and recurrence relations. AS Level Unit One (Algebra and Graphs) You will study a range of pure maths topics such as Linear Modelling, Quadratics, Simultaneous Equations, Exponential and Logarithms, Transformations and Trigonometry. Unit Two (Statistics) You will study a range of statistics topics such as Averages and Spreads, Statistical Diagrams, Correlation and Regression, Normal Distribution and Critical Thinking. Unit Three (Applying Mathematics) You will study a range of pure maths topics such as Recurrence Relations and Simulations. How you will learn Lessons are usually teacher led and could involve investigation, discussion, group work and working on examples. You will use text books for each unit which is sometimes supplemented by extra worksheets. Scientific and graphical calculators are used extensively throughout the course. Graphical calculators are essential for the examinations. How you will be assessed You have to do coursework for each of the first two units. The coursework counts for 50% of the unit. The other 50% is assessed by examination. The final unit is assessed by a 1 hour comprehension paper and a 90 minute written paper. Special entry requirements You will need at least a grade C in GCSE Maths. What the students say Very enjoyable, each lesson you learn something different.
