AS Level Physics (PHYS-S) Course Description What will I learn on this course? Through experiments, demonstrations, discussions and calculations we will answer such questions as: AS ? What happens inside atoms? ? What is light? ? What is a superconductor? ? What is a laser? ? How is a bungee jump planned? ? What happens on a roller-coaster? A2 ? What has happened to the Universe since the Big Bang? ? How does gravity work? ? How can we investigate fundamental particles? ? Why does the temperature scale stop at the cold end but not at the hot end? ? What were the key turning points in the history of physics? ? How has physics revolutionised medicine? What kind of assessments will I have to complete to get my qualification? We teach the AQA A specification which comprises six units (three in each year) AS Unit 1: Particles, Quantum Phenomena and Electricity Unit 2: Mechanics, Materials and Waves Unit 3: Investigative and Practical Skills in AS Physics A2 Unit 4: Fields and Further Mechanics Unit 5: Nuclear and Thermal Physics and an option taken from either Astrophysics, Medical Physics, Applied Physics or Turning points in physics Unit 6: Investigative and Practical Skills in A2 Physics What kind of student is this course suitable for? Someone who likes asking questions about the physical world, from atoms to galaxies, and trying to understand why things happen and how they work. You should be good at doing experiments, explaining theory and using Mathematics. It is a great help to also study Mathematics at A or AS level, although not essential. What could I do with a qualification in this subject? Physics A level is necessary for courses in Physics, Engineering, Electronics or Materials Science, as is A level Mathematics. It's useful for other Science courses, Medicine, Earth Sciences or Architecture. However, the training in logical thinking and communication of ideas would also help you in careers such as Law.
