Course Description

AS Level Physics (Edexcel) A-level Physics involves the standard topics of mechanics, electricity, waves, thermal physics and atomic & nuclear physics. In this course these topics are studied through six units which are based on different contexts that are important applications of physics such as music, space and transport technology. What will I be doing? AS Level (First Year of Course) Physics on the go Physics at work Exploring Physics A2 Level (Second Year of Course) Physics on the move Physics from creation to collapse Experimental Physics How will I be assessed? Unit 1 and Unit2 are each assessed through a single 1 hour 20 minute unit test. The tests are composed of short answer questions. Unit 3 (coursework) is an assessment of an experimental report based on an industrial visit. Unit 4 and Unit 5 are each assessed through a single 1 hour 35 minute unit test. The tests are composed of multiple choice, short answer and longer answer questions Unit 6 (coursework) is an assessment of a plan for a two hour experiment and a report analysing the results of that experiment. What can I do after completing this course? An A-level in Physics will lead directly into degree courses in physics, engineering, astronomy, radiography, ophthalmy /optics and electronics. It is highly recommended as a qualifying subject for medicine, architecture, chemistry, mathematics and physiotherapy. It also very acceptable for subjects such as law, accountancy, psychology and geography and many other areas as it is highly valued as a numerate discipline. Indirectly the subject is a route into careers such as aviation, forensic science, medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, telecommunications and computing.
