Course information: AS Level in Chemistry Course summary: This one-year course leads to an AS level, which is a qualification in its own right. It can also be used as the first half (50%) of an A level qualification. Course content: You will study the following three modules: Module 1 Foundation Chemistry 1 1. Atomic Structure 2. Amount of substance 3. Bonding 4. Periodicity Module 2 Foundation Chemistry 2 1. Energetics 2. Kinetics 3. Equilibria 4. Redox Reactions 5. Group VII - the Hologens 6. Extractions of Metals Module 3 Foundation Chemistry 3 a) Introduction to Organic Chemistry 1. Nomenclature and Isomerism 2. Petroleum and Alkanes 3. Alkenes and Epoxythane 4. Haloakanes 5. Alcohols b) Centre Assessed coursework Course structure: The AS and A level specification encourages candidates to: a) develop essential knowledge and understanding of the concepts of chemistry, and the skills needed for the use of these new and changing situations:. b) develop an understanding of the link between theory and experiment; c) be aware of how advances in information technology and instrumentation are used in chemistry; d) appreciate the contribution of chemistry to society and the responsible use scientific knowledge and evidence; e) sustain and develop their enjoyment of, and interest in, chemistry. In addition, the A level specification should encourage candidates to: f) bring together knowledge of ways in which different areas of chemistry relate to each other. Assessment procedure: AS Module 1 1? hour examinations consisting of structured questions. 30% of the total AS marks, 15% of the total A level marks Module 2 As above Module 3 1? hour examinations consisting of structured questions. 25% of the total AS marks, 12?% of the total A level marks Centre assessed coursework represents 15% of the total AS marks and 7?% of the total A level marks. Qualifications achieved: GCE AS Level Chemistry, awarded by AQA (NEAB) Progression opportunities: Successful students could progress to an A2 Level in Chemistry.
