Human Biology Level : AS and A Level Board : OCR Method of assessment In your first year you will have two exams and write one piece of coursework which involves internal assessment of practical work. In your second year you will have a further two exams and complete one extended investigation. Why choose this course? Human Biology is presented through the use of work related contexts in the caring and biomedical professions. This unique approach gives the subject relevance and interest. It will build upon topics you have already studied at GCSE and present them by referring to their particular medical applications. You will also be introduced to some of the exciting new advances being made in this field such as stem cell therapies and the imaging methods in the diagnosis of cancer. Human Biology is a practical subject so you develop experimental skills. Human Biology supports a number of careers such as Nursing, Midwifery and Sports Science. What will I study? Topics covered in the first year include blood, the circulatory system and gas exchange, which are related to aspects of health and first aid. You will also study growth, development and disease, including cancer, foetal development and immunisation. In the second year you will look at energy, reproduction and populations, which cover topics as diverse as improving athletic performance and assisted reproductive techniques such as IVF. The final module - Genetics, Control and Ageing - investigates diabetes, the inheritance of genetic diseases, the effects of drugs on the brain and the managing of the ageing process.
