Course Description

AS Level Critical Thinking course code: cs-crit start dates: September 2010 course length: 1 Year location: WCT - St Andrew's Building, Deansway course content Critical thinking is reflective thinking based on reason and focused on deciding what we should believe or do. Students who take AS Level Critical Thinking find that they develop a number of thinking skills that help in their other subjects. These skills include the ability to analyse the structure of arguments, to identify flaws in arguments, and to evaluate definitions, reasoning, analogies, assumptions and explanations. Students also learn to evaluate evidence, to distinguish between fact and judgement and to consider the credibility of sources. These skills help students to improve the quality of their written work in other subjects. Students with lively minds can do very well in this subject; each year we have students gaining the highest grades. A lot of the topics are covered through discussion, group work, presentations, quizzes and brainteasers. The AS in Critical Thinking consists of two modules. In the first module, Introduction to Critical Thinking, you will become familiar with the language of reasoning, for example the structure of arguments and the meaning of terms such as 'counter-assertion'. You will also consider the issue of Credibility, for example whether there is 'bias' or 'vested interest' in claims made. The second module, Assessing and Developing Argument, consists of in-depth analysis of argument structure and the identification of flaws in reasoning, such as arguments that rely on attacking the person who made the claim rather than their ideas. You will also develop your own arguments. assessment Assessment is by two examinations based on response material, each lasting 1? hours. Paper 1 consists of short-answer and more discursive questions; paper 2 of multiple choice and a mixture of short and long answer questions. The exam board is OCR.
