Mathematics AS/A2 Why study Mathematics? Mathematics has been studied for thousands of years, yet it is still a vital, vibrant and developing subject. It forms part of every aspect of modern life, for example in science, technology, business and commerce. It provides essential skills for dealing with the problems of the modern world. It gives users techniques for understanding and solving problems. It encourages the development of logical and enquiring minds. There are good economic reasons for studying mathematics. This is probably the most marketable A-level in terms of acceptability. It is difficult to think of any course/career where it would not be welcomed in combination with other subjects. What will I study on this course? Decision mathematics develops the ideas used in modern technology. Statistics is the study of data. How is this course assessed? There is no coursework. Each unit is assessed by a 1 hour examination. What kind of student will do well on this course? Students must be competent in manipulating algebraic equations. They should enjoy interpreting graphs.
