AS & A Level Health & Social Care course code: cs-hscd start dates: September 2010 course length: 1 Year location: WCT - St Andrew's Building, Deansway you may also be interested in: Biology and Sociology course content You will enjoy this course if you would like to develop a broad understanding of the sector - skills as well as technical knowledge - and an awareness of particular groups and their needs by focussing on Health, Early Years (Care and Education), Care of Older People, or Individuals with Specific Needs. The qualification has the traditional ASA2 structure. AS means Advanced Subsidiary. This is the first half of an A Level. You can start off with the AS Level and then decide if you want to take the subject forward for a full A Level. In the AS Units you will learn about: Human Growth and Development Communication and Values Positive Care Environments In the A2 Units you will learn about: Meeting Individual Needs Promoting Health and Wellbeing Investigating Disease assessment You will have a written examination in the form of a question and answer booklet. The examination will last one and a half hours. For other units you will be assessed by coursework. You will also be required to go on a work placement and students will have to pay for a police check in order to successful complete this work placement. progression The AS and A Level qualifies for UCAS points so that if you complete it successfully you could move on to study for a Foundation Degree, Degree or Higher National Diploma in related subjects. Requirement In order to study for AS Levels students must have: 5 GCSEs (in academic subjects*) at C or above in order to study 4 AS Levels 4 GCSEs (in academic subjects*) at C or above in order to study 3 AS Levels and 1 GCSE. All students who do not have GCSE English Language at C or above will be expected to take this as a subject in their first year. * 'Academic subjects' exclude short courses, Childcare, PE, CDT, Resistant Materials, Home Economics, GNVQs below merit or NVQs. Students are expected to have GCSE English Language at C or above and any science at C or above.
