Course Description

This course is designed to give learners an introduction to working in the land based sector and to develop personal and basic educational skills. The course is for those who would prefer to develop their skills in a small group setting with the necessary support to improve their confidence, motivation and academic abilities. It is suitable for those with learning difficulties or those who may need extra support to succeed in their vocational subject area. The programme is flexible and will help you to sort out and plan for your next move. It is an exciting and challenging programme, designed to develop your personal and animal skills and give you a chance to use and practice the required skills. Course content: 3 preparing for work units ? Work safely ? Lift and handle safely ? Prepare and attend an interview 3 personal and social development units ? Working as part of a group ? Community action (Cambridge only) ? Dealing with problems in daily life (Wisbech only) ? Healthy living Vocational units: ? Assist with catching and restraining a small animal ? Check that a small animal is healthy ? Groom a small animal ? Recognise types and parts of the body of small animals ? Assist with cleaning housing for small animals If you study at the Wisbech campus, you will also study these additional units: ? Recognise a healthy farm animal ? Clean farm animal housing ? Bed down farm animals ? Characteristics and breeds of poultry ? Check poultry are healthy ? Poultry housing and bedding ? Disinfect poultry accommodation ? Grading poultry eggs If you study at the Cambridge campus, you will also study these additional units: ? Show visitors around a small animal enterprise ? Recognise colours, markings and points of a horse ? Skip out a stable ? Catch and lead a horse ? Recognise signs of health in a horse ? Saddle and bridle a horse ? Clean horse tack Students also work towards City and Guilds functional skills qualifications (at entry level) and an Edexcel PSD award or certificate (also at entry level).
