Course Description

Advanced Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment - Level 3 Is this the right course for me? Yes - If you wish to follow a career pathway into construction design, planning, surveying, architecture, quantity surveying, or construction management within the construction and built environment sector. What will I need to join the course? Five GCSEs at Grade C or above, including Math, English and Science, or an equivalent Level 2 qualification. You should be able to work both alone, with others and be self-motivated. The course is open to 16 -18 year olds. What will I be doing? The course is equivalent to 3 A levels and involves practical projects, employer involvement and work-related study. There are three main areas of study: Principal Learning, Generic Learning and Additional Specialist Learning. Principal learning: Seven units: ? Design the Built Environment: The Design Factors ? Design the Built Environment: Stages in the Design and Planning Process ? Create the Built Environment: Health, Safety and Environmental Influences ? Create the Built Environment: Management Processes ? Create the Built Environment: Physical and Environmental Influences ? Value and Use of the Built Environment: Adding Value to the Wider Community ? Value and Use of the Built Environment: Protecting and Maintaining Generic Learning: including: ? Work Placements (Min 10 days) ? Functional Skills (English, Math, ICT) ? Project Work ? Personal, Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS) Additional Specialist Learning: This will be achieved by undertaking a selection of 6 units from the EDEXCEL Level 3 BTEC Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment or continued study at one of the local schools to achieve additional A levels. BTEC units These are some of the units available but actual units to be undertaken will be determined at the start of the course. ? Mathematics in Construction and the Built Environment ? Science and Materials in Construction and the Built Environment ? Planning, Organisation and Control of Resources in Construction and the Built Environment ? Graphical Detailing in Construction and the Built Environment ? Surveying in Construction and Civil Engineering ? Building Surveying in Construction ? ICT and CAD in Construction and the Built Environment How long will the course last and what patterns of attendance are available? This is a two year full-time course for which attendance is required for approximately 2 days per week depending on the Additional Specialist Learning route. How will my progress on the course be assessed? The work will be assessed by a variety of methods including continual assessment, set assignments, externally set assessments and project work. Functional skills These will be undertaken to Level 2 in Math, English and ICT What will I achieve? Successful candidates will achieve ? EDEXCEL Advanced Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment And (depending on the select ASL route) either: ? EDEXCEL Level 3 Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment Or ? A selected A Level What will it cost? To be discussed at interview Students under 19 do not pay tuition or exam fees. Students claiming income-based benefits may receive a discount on tuition fees, but will be liable for full registration/examination fees. And the future? Progression to Higher Education onto a select Degree course. The Diploma does not limit learners to a career in this sector; it gives them relevant, transferrable skills that will be welcomed by colleges, universities and employers.
