Care, Health and Early Learning - Adult Studies Advanced Certificate in Counselling(20102011) Study Method: Class sessions will be weekly lectures and two Saturday Schools which are mandatory. Class sessions will be participative combing individual work, tutor input, group exercises and role-plays. There will also be background reading. Duration : 36 weeks (120-hours) Who the Course is For: The Advanced Certificate in Counselling is intended primarily for those people who wish to study and use counselling in their work roles - for example nursing, teaching, social work, working with voluntary organisations, policing and armed forces are all occupational settings where counselling is used successfully. Presently there are no counselling awards designed specifically for this purpose. Course Leads To: Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling (Integrative) Entry Requirements: Entry to this course follows the successful completion of the Intermeditate Certificate in Introduction to Counselling Concepts and Intermeditate Certificate in Counselling Skills or equivalent. Students must have an interest in working with people and be a minimum of 19 years. Students will be required to attend an interview selection process. Content: The primary learning goal for this course is that students will acquire a comprehensive ability in both counselling skills and theory. Students will be introduced to the three main theoretical approaches that underpin counselling. Humanistic, Psychodynamic and Cognitive Behavioural. Opportunity is provided for students to discover the effect of core theories by studying each one in turn in relation to the three stages of a counselling process. Theory will be applied in triad groups allowing students to deepen understanding of their work.
