Course Description

Advanced Award Forest School Leaders Who is the course for? If you are interested in setting up and running a Forest School, or delivering Forest School sessions, where you will work with children, young adults or others in an outdoor environment. Intensive Training Option We also offer this course as an intensive training option over 5 days + 2 residential tutorial days + a 1 day practical assessment. The outreach training course is for a minimum of 10 people and a maximum of 16 people, leading to the BTEC Advanced Award in Forest School Leadership. After completing the above training days with the Forest School Team you will be required to complete further compulsory aspects of the course. These aspects are planning and implimenting Forest School sessions for a group of children or young people, completing and evaluate log of sessions, writing a report based on your findings, being practically assessed and creating a staff handbook. You will be given completion dates for each of these tasks. The total time commitment an average student is 9 - 12 months from the onset of training with us. What will I study on the course? You will learn to plan appropriate outdoor activities and experiences aimed to promote participants' learning and development. You will learn to plan these activities within the constraints of the setting, safety and the needs of participants, carers and staff. You will learn to use the resources and how to set and use evaluation criteria including monitoring, observing and recording. You will teach 6 sessions of 1.5 hours each with your chosen client group, keeping a logbook of activities and development. You will learn a wide range of practical skills including listening, movement, touch and sight. You will be taught how to teach the safe use of tools, (pen knives / saws), including safety procedures and uses for each tool. Uses for various types of wood and conservation issues will form a part of your learning experience. Basic construction of structures: Participants will learn to build structures using natural materials to various designs. You will, learn basic knots and lashings and recognition of natural shapes in wood to aid construction. Types and construction of fires: You will be able to supervise participants building and lighting fires to cook meals on, including safety procedures, the fire triangle, fuels and tinder. During the winter months, you will be classroom based, learning the theory to back up the practical experiences which are delivered during the lighter evenings of spring and summer. You will need to attend for 90% of the sessions, including a 'Tutorial and Skills' residential. What is special about studying at Bridgwater College? Bridgwater College Forest School won the Queens Anniversary Prize in 2000. We gained this prestigious award for our innovative approach to the teaching of a range of pupils from pre-school children through to disadvantaged and disaffected older children and students. You will learn to use a variety of techniques including demonstrations and discussion, experiential learning and behaviour management. You will be taught by a multi disciplinary teaching team. All staff, work with a cross section of groups from Early Years to disaffected students. How will I be assessed? You will be assessed through coursework directly related to your work with children or young adults. Your knowledge and understanding will be assessed through assignments, group presentations and practical projects. Will this course lead to a qualification? BTEC Advanced Award for Forest School Leaders Level 3. What can I do on completion of this course? You could set up, or work, in a Forest School, or deliver Forest School sessions in your work setting with children or young adults.
