Course Description

For graduates of any discipline, this course prepares you to launch your career in accounting, auditing or finance. It also establishes a good basis for anyone seeking a general business career who wants a deeper understanding of accounting and finance issues. On completion you will be eligible for exemption from the professional exams of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), a professional qualification recognised worldwide. We have good links with professional accounting bodies and accounting firms. The academics from the programme have wide experience in the professional world and are able to provide practical insights. The course is intensive and covers financial accounting, audit, management accounting and corporate finance. You complete your studies by taking two case-based independent study modules, allowing you to apply your new skills to real-world problems. We offer a range of courses to help you meet the academic and English language entry requirements for this course and also familiarise you with university life. You may also be able to apply for one student visa to cover both courses. All modules are compulsory. Business Concepts This background module is undertaken as distance learning before the course begins, and is assessed by assignment and in class once you arrive in Oxford. The module introduces core business concepts to those who have never studied the subject before. It also allows you to practise the study skills you will need throughout the rest of your studies. Semester 1 modules Management Accounting Techniques Management accounting is a discipline that allows managers to use financial information to help plan their business, control activities and make decisions. In this module we will study the basic management accounting concepts of cost control, budgeting and performance review. Financial Accounting Techniques Financial accounting is concerned with the way that organisations report their financial performance to outside stakeholders. In this module we will study how organisations prepare their financial reports. We will also study the theory of accounting and consider key problems such as how to measure profit and how to value an organisation s assets. Corporate Finance Concepts This module studies how organisations finance their operations. We will study the various sources of finance they can use and how they can chose which ones to use. We will also look at financial markets and how they operate. Semester 2 Decision Making and Control This module builds on the knowledge of management accounting from Semester 1. In it we study more advanced topics and consider how modern globalised organisations can use accounting techniques to improve their competitiveness. Financial Reporting In this module we study more advanced reporting topics. For example we consider how to account for mergers between businesses. We also look at how external stakeholders can assess the performance of an organisation using financial analysis techniques Audit and Assurance In the current economic environment accurate financial reports and good corporate governance are essential to the success of organisations. In this module we look at how stakeholders can be sure that the financial reports they use have been prepared in accordance with current best practice. We will look at how the audit of accounts is undertaken.
