Course Description

Biology: AS/A2 Level What you will study The course includes units on all forms of biology, including Nutrition, Respiration, Ecology and Homeostasis. The course examines the physiology of body systems, basic biochemistry, and cell ultrastructure. AS Level Course BY1 Cell ultrastructure, Basic biochemistry. BY2 Biodiversity and Physiology of body systems. BY3 A2 Level Course BY4 Metabolism, Homeostasis and Microbiology BY5 Environment, genetics and evolution. There is also an element of previous topics examined in the BY5 exam. BY6 Practical assessment Externally marked practical work carried out over a three month period in the school, including microscope drawing. This is similar to BY3, but the level of difficulty is greater. Who the course is for The aim of the course is to continue to develop scientific skills, knowledge and understanding and to prepare students either for entry into Higher Education or into employment in Science or Health related areas As a full time student at Llandrillo you can study a combination of BTEC National Diplomas, A levels, AS levels, NVQs. Our staff will be very happy to help you put together a programme most suited to your needs. How you will study The course is delivered through practical and theory sessions. How you will be assessed Module examinations may be taken in January and June. There is a final synoptic examination in June. Qualification Title AS/A2 Level Biology Course Length One year for the AS Level. Two years for the full A Level. Course Availability The course is available at the following campus(es): Rhos-on-Sea Rhyl Entry Guidelines 5 GCSEs Grade C or above, including a minimum of Grade C in Biology or CC in Double Award Science. Assuming you attain a grade in the AS Biology course then you can upgrade to the A2 course. Those students who study Chemistry as well as Biology tend to find it an advantage although it must be pointed out that this is NOT compulsory. You must be prepared to read around the subject and understand that embarking on an A level course implies that you have an interest in Biology and Science in its wider applications.
