This OCR A, A2 chemistry course is the second year of the A level course which forms the progression from the AS course. The completion of the A level course can lead to university entrance. What will I study? You will study 3 units on this course. The first unit focuses on carbonyl and ring compounds, polymer chains and more analytical techniques. The second unit looks at transition elements and develops quantitative ideas relating to equilibrium and energetics. The final unit draws upon practical assessments relating to concepts within the other units. These are the compulsory subjects: Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, proton and carbon-13 NMR. Rates of reaction. Acids, bases and buffers. Electrode potentials and fuel cells. How Science Works. What are the entry requirements? You will need a grade D at AS level Chemistry to enter this course provided the AS course is compatible with the OCR A, A level. What can I do next? The majority of successful students progress to university to study science related degree programs such as chemical engineering, materials science, environmental science, biotechnology etc. What employment does this relate to? Chemistry is a central science feeding into medicine, engineering, materials, life science and earth science. A level Chemistry is essential for some professions such as: medicine, pharmacy and veterinary science. Chemists can work in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries, public services (forensics, water, health, environmental) academia and teaching, publishing and technical writing, patent law, finance and investment. Chemistry graduates with careers away from chemistry include accountancy, finance, law, sales and marketing, consultancy. How will I be assessed? Internal assessment is carried out on a regular basis External assessment involves 2 written exams and practical assessments. Written exams: 1 hour exam representing 15% of the A level 1 3/4 hour exam representing 25% of the A level Practical assessment involves 3 practical assignments including a marked test which is moderated by OCR representing 10% of the A level.
