Course Description

A/S PHYSICS Next start date(s) Sep Course Location Ardleigh Green Is this course for me? AQA Physics A (5451) provides a seamless transition to A Level from previous studies and develops your interest and enthusiasm for physics. The specification thus provides a smooth pathway from GCSE and a route to university courses in physics and other subjects in which physics is a key component. The course is assessed by the Assessment and Qualifications Alliance (AQA) and can be broadly split into two sections, the AS year and the A2 year. If you are studying for a full A level you must complete both sections. Those studying for the AS qualification complete the AS year only. What will I study? On this AS Physics course you will study two units. The first theory unit includes the study of nuclear particles such as leptons and quarks. The unit also includes quantum phenomena which incorporates photoelectricity, photon emission and similar ideas. Electricity completes this unit with the study of resistivity, circuits and alternating currents. The second unit begins with mechanics which develops ideas of projectile motion, Newton's Laws of motion, energy and power. Properties of materials such as density and Young's Modulus also fall within this unit. The study of waves completes the unit which includes diffraction, interference and other wave concepts. A practical skills unit emerges from these theory units to complete the AS course. These are the compulsory subjects: Unit 1 - Particles, Quantum Phenomena and Electricity Unit 2 - Mechanics, Materials and Waves Unit 3 - Investigative and Practical Skills in AS Physics What are the entry requirements? You will be expected to have grade C or above in both GCSE Science and Additional Science or a grade C or above in GCSE Physics or an equivalent level 2 qualification. In addition you must have a grade C in GCSE Maths plus a grade C or above in GCSE English Language. What can I do next? A level Physics is an important qualification for many careers. Some students go on to study physics at university leading to a career in research and development into high temperature semiconductors or more efficient ways of storing energy for cars. The majority of those who study A level Physics do so in order to apply their physics knowledge in another subject area at university e.g. many branches of engineering, electronics and meteorology. What employment does this relate to? A level Physics leads to a variety of careers, not just Physics and engineering Possible careers that A level Physics can lead to: Food scientist, climatologist, medical physicist, radiographer, geophysicist, audio technician, oceanographer, chemist, ergonomics expert, naval architect etc. How will I be assessed? Assessment is carried out through regular internal tests whilst external assessment includes two written papers and a practical assessment.
